Portrait of a Generation: The Love Parade Family Book is one of the most important photographic documents of 1990s rave culture. In 1996, photographer Alfred Steffen set up a temporary roadside studio during Berlin's legendary Love Parade and photographed more than 250 attendees over a continuous 36-hour period.

The resulting images capture a generation at the height of techno's cultural explosion. Sunburnt faces, handmade outfits, glitter, exhaustion and euphoria are all presented with an honesty that avoids sensationalism, instead focusing on the individuality and optimism of the people who built the scene. Shot against a simple backdrop, the portraits create a powerful collective snapshot of youth culture before the commercialisation of electronic music.

Published by Taschen in 1997, the book contains 140 portraits from the series and remains one of the defining visual records of Berlin's Love Parade era. Equal parts fashion document, social history and subcultural archive, it captures a fleeting moment when music, identity and community converged on an unprecedented scale.
