A defining photographic study of femininity, identity and consumer culture in contemporary America, Girl Culture sees photographer Lauren Greenfield examine the pressures, aspirations and contradictions facing young women at the turn of the millennium.

Through more than 100 photographs and a series of personal interviews, Greenfield documents girls and young women from a wide range of social and economic backgrounds, exploring themes of beauty, body image, sexuality, celebrity, wealth and self-presentation. Moving between shopping malls, beauty pageants, bedrooms and dressing rooms, the work reveals how popular culture shapes the construction of identity from an early age. Published in 2002, the book became one of Greenfield's most celebrated projects and later developed into an internationally touring exhibition.

Part documentary photography, part social commentary, Girl Culture remains a powerful record of the anxieties and ambitions of a generation growing up in an increasingly image-driven world. With an introduction by cultural historian Joan Jacobs Brumberg, it stands as one of the most influential photographic publications of the early 2000s.
