JULIANA FUTTER x
OPEN DOORS HACKNEY
It’s women’s history month, and although there are still a lot of improvements to be made in the grand scheme of intersectional feminism, we’re happy that as a women-lead business we are able to do what we do. We thought we’d link up with illustrator Julianna Futter to create a limited edition print, the proceeds of which (as well as 10% of all profits from this month) will go to our chosen charity.
Our charity of choice is Open Doors, Hackney. A confidential drop in service supporting people in East London working in the sex industry – an underepresented cause who sadly do not get enough help to do the work they do.
In order to get a better understanding of Open Doors and what they do, we decided to speak to their Coordinator, Jacqueline Vennard, who told us more about what she does, how sex workers have been affected by the pandemic and how we can help.

INTRODUCING: KIRSTEN ALLEN FOR SS21
It’s all kicking off. The Spring Equinox is upon us, daylight is taking over the night and as lockdown eases the world is starting to open up again. Finally. So to commemorate this landmark change-up we’ve decided to collaborate with fellow artist and photographer Kirsten Allen to present our most positive collection to date.
We checked in with Kirsten on the inspiration behind the SS21 shoot, living in L.A and the future of this new world living.

FIVE WITH... MACCA FROM ONE GLOVE
It’s often said that you could live in Manhattan all your life, eat at a different restaurant for every single meal, and you still wouldn’t cover all the eateries in the marvellous city. Although we at Brother planned to do a reckie in NYC last year, it never happened so instead we decided we’d better get some recommendations before we head halfway across the world.

TAPE #o3 -ELECTRIC LAPLAND
Finland is famous for being the happiest Country in the World. A nordic utopia, It’s got the world's best education system, the cleanest air an incredible amount of lakes, saunas like no others, Nokia handsets galore and it’s most important landmark of all, the home of Christmas – Lapland! It’s lesser known export and the one we’re here to talk about today is the burgeoning electronic scene that is pumping out of every glacier. There’s a reason snow rhymes with techno. Seriously let’s move there now!

IN CONVO W/ ELSA BLANCHARD
At Brother we love finding new and exciting photographers using instruments to document scenes we love and pivotal moments. Elsa Blanchard, Paris based photographer and graphic designer does both. Our writer Ella Sadie sat down with her over zoom to talk about how photography can be a form of activism and whether you can really be a fly on the wall with a camera.

IN CONVO w/ FIONA CARTLEDGE
The Sign Of The Times shop of Kensington Market and Covent Garden was and still is a big influencer for the birth of Brother, so being able to sit down in conversation with it’s creator Fiona Cartledge was a real privilege. We cover acid house, vintage fashion, retail highs and lows and the general rollercoaster era that is known as the 90’s – and thats just the half of it. Strap in for this one though – it’s a bit of a long read so get yourself a coffee and delve in. You’ll see why we couldn’t bear to cut anything out.

MODEL STORIES: CLOTILDE NOGUES
At Brother, we don’t really believe in the traditional ‘model’. we prefer to use real people with real stories to tell. Welcome to Model Stories; an interview series with the people we’ve persuaded to be clothes horses for us. For episode one, we’re getting cosy with Clothilde, a journalist and bedroom DJ who likes to borrow from her dad's wardrobe and surf in Biarritz.

THE ‘DARIEN TAYLOR’ SERIES
The Eighties. An aspirational landscape where anything was possible – some say the beginning of the future. Labelled as THE decade that taste forgot, its a hard sell trying to ship the 80s as a style making era. In some instances I tend to agree. The 80’s was bleak and disconcerting especially for anyone living on the fringes of society and dare I say it ‘THE DOLL’. That said, for anyone on Wall Street making fresh green paper, they were the best of times, bankers were the new rockstars and high-rolling was a sympton of this money making phenomenon. The rich weren’t just rich. They we’re filthy rich.

SPACE IBIZA: THE ULTIMATE CLUB
In October, 2016, the infamous Ibiza club SPACE, a haven for ravers, misfits and sun chasers alike, shut its doors for the last time, leaving its many fans upset, yet satisfied, and those who never got to go distraught at the lack of it. The club was a revolution in itself, and we’re honoring it’s memory by watching 27 years of Space, a documentary by tv2beat released by the club on their YouTube channel around the same time as it closed.

PRODUCT FOCUS: THE STUSSY TEE
In 1979, Shawn Stussy started scrawling his signature logo on the surfboards manufactured in his store. He was irritated. He’d been caught in the ’60s and 70’s bro culture that accompanied the Californian surf scene and was listening to way too much punk music to let it sit with him.

PRODUCT IN FOCUS: LOUCHE MAG ISSUE #1
Creating a magazine is no easy feat, but creating a piece of literature that captures the beating heart of a subculture is a true work of art. That’s what we would call Louche Magazine, the brainchild of Drag King Georgeous Michael. The magazine itself is beautiful, it feels weighty and real, and captures intimate and intricate moments between radical drag performers and the audience, an important relationship we’re all missing.
